The $20 & 5-minute solution? A 1m LED strip light.
It can be easily cut to length (at the marked cut points) and has a self-adhesive backing to mount it inconspicuously.
GridConnect so it is an app controlled smart-light or can be controlled by the included remote.
Problem.

A great D.I.Y. solution to a lighting issue @Adam_W. I love the idea of a tea nook as well, as it looks like a fantastic way of keeping the benchtop clear.
With an Arlec Grid Connect Smart Plug In Socket you could also have that kettle boiled and waiting for you in the morning.
