hello, I am wondering if anyone has any ideas as to how this can be repaired. I’m not sure what the material is but it has randomly peaked away from the cabinet. Can I replace the material coating this cabinet?
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @elisefrancis. It's wonderful to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about repairing a cabinet door.
The peeling coating on your cabinet is likely a vacuum-formed vinyl finish, a common technique used by manufacturers to apply a durable, smooth layer to MDF or particleboard surfaces. Unfortunately, this type of coating cannot be replicated at home due to the specialised machinery required during production.
While you may not be able to DIY the exact vinyl coating, there are a few alternatives. One option is to apply an iron-on laminate, which involves pressing a vinyl or laminate sheet onto the damaged area using heat. However, this will not match the original finish in terms of texture or appearance. Another choice is to sand the affected area and then paint the exposed MDF, but this would create a different look from the other cabinet doors and might not blend as seamlessly.
The most straightforward solution, especially since the damage is extensive, is to replace the door entirely. If you can determine the manufacturer of your cabinetry, you might be able to order a replacement door that matches the original style. In some cases, brands like Kaboodle may offer doors that fit or are close enough in style, which could save time and effort. If a perfect match isn’t available, you could also consider a custom door, but replacement is generally the best way to restore the cabinet’s appearance.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
