How to remove ceiling stain?

In our kitchen near the countertop, some stains have appeared. We tried cleaning them, but it was no use. If we look closely we can also see small, crater-like dots from the stain. What are these and how can we get rid of it?

Re: How to remove ceiling stain?

Hello @twinnxxx

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about the stain on your ceiling.

If the stain was not caused from inside such as someone throwing sauce towards the ceiling. I suspect that you might have a leak in your roof which is settling on your ceiling. I propose doing a little bit of an investigation before you carry out any repairs. If you can reach your ceiling surface, check to see if it is soft or spongy, is the paint showing signs of flaking or peeling, is there a damp smell to the surface. If any of these symptoms are present, odds are there is a leak in your roof.

If there is, I suggest addressing the leak first before you carry out your repairs. The general repair to you ceiling will involve cutting out the damaged sections and patching it with new plasterboard. The joins will need to be filled and the surface primed and painted.

However, if it is just an ordinary stain, I suggest lightly sanding the surface until the stain fades and applying ceiling paint to the surface to cover it up. Should the stain return, I suggest investigating having a look inside your ceiling cavity, if possible, to see what could be causing it.

Please remember to take proper safety precautions when working at height on a ladder or when crawling in tight confined spaces with electrical or plumbing utilities present. Remember to wear personal protection such as appropriate clothing, gloves, goggles and a dust mask.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Eric
