How to paint vinyl wood cupboards?

IMG_7550.jpeg

Hi! I have wooden vinyl cupboards that are quite outdated and I’d like to paint them white. But I’m not sure what the process should be and how to do this. Any help appreciated! Thanks!

Re: How to paint vinyl wood cupboards?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @morganwetram. It's wonderful to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about painting cabinets.

Painting your cupboards is definitely possible, and the Dulux Renovation range would be a great option, as it provides a hard-wearing, damage-resistant finish. Before starting, it’s important to confirm exactly what material you’re working with. From the worn areas in your image, it looks like this could be at least real timber veneer, and the clear varnish has deteriorated to reveal bare timber beneath.

If you can take a picture of the edge of one of the doors, that would help determine whether it’s timber veneer or laminate. The preparation and products used may differ depending on the surface type.

I also wanted to mention that your cabinets' timber look is quite on-trend and is quite popular in many high-end kitchen installs. If they have a real veneer, you might want to consider sanding back the slightly yellow coating and applying a clear coat instead of painting. Updating the handles would modernise the look as they significantly date the cabinets. However, if it’s laminate, which is basically a plastic coating, then painting is definitely the best option.

If you did intend on keeping the timber finish, the benchtop’s style might also be worth considering, as a different surface could help tie everything together for a more contemporary finish.

If you don't like the timber look, it's totally understandable that you want to cover it with paint, and I'd be happy to advise further once we can identify the exact material.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
