Create this industrial-style mobile island for your kitchen or barbecue area in just a few hours.
This guide shows you how to assemble this attractive and functional piece with limited cutting required.
Cut the Merbau timber into two lengths and two widths that are 2cm in from the edge of the tabletop to create a border. Once you’ve cut the pieces, create a frame with two 40mm screws at each joint. Drill a small hole first to guide the screws in smoothly. Use zinc-plated angle brackets to keep this border strong by fixing with button screws.
Before securing this frame to the top of the table, put the flanges in place and mark them. Drill a guiding hole and then screw in the flanges. Put a layer of construction adhesive around the top of the frame, place it on top of the table around the flanges, and then flip the whole thing over and let the glue dry.
Put flanges on top of the other two Teak panels. Make sure that the flanges are in line by measuring how far the screw holes are in from the edges on the top piece and then repeat for the other Teak panels. Take your time with this as it’s important everything lines up.
Before you screw the flanges in place, take a 25mm drill bit and drill right through the centre shelf at each corner based on where the flange hole is. Sand these holes slightly and slide the rods through. The rods are usually a snug fit. Put a small screw through the flange and bar on the underside of the middle shelf where it won’t be seen.
Fit castor wheels underneath the bottom shelf piece. Gently screw these into place using button screws so that the wood doesn’t split.
Position the rods to make sure everything is aligned before securing the rods in the flanges using clear silicone. Fit the middle shelf in place on top of the bottom rods.
Before placing the top of the table on, add a tea towel rail. Now place the top shelf on top of the rods.
Your mobile kitchen island is ready for styling.
