Step 1

Clean the area.

Use turpentine or a similar solvent to clean the area where you are applying the silicone sealant. Remove any old sealant, dirt, grease, or loose material.

Ensure the area is dry before proceeding.

Step 2

Apply masking tape.

Apply masking tape to both sides of the gap where you are applying the sealant. Leave space in the middle for the sealant to fill.

The tape will help you achieve a neat and even finish by preventing the sealant from smudging or spreading beyond the joint.

Step 3

Cut the nozzle.

Use a utility knife to cut the nozzle of the sealant cartridge at a 45-degree angle to ensure easy and precise application.

Make sure the nozzle is securely attached to the cartridge before inserting the latter into the caulking gun.

Step 4

Apply the silicone sealant.

Hold the caulking gun at a 45-degree angle to the gap you are sealing.

Place the nozzle against the surface and squeeze the gun’s trigger steadily. Apply an even and consistent bead of sealant along the entire length of the joint. Maintain a constant pressure on the trigger to control the flow.

If the gap is deep, you may need to apply multiple layers of the sealant. Allow each layer to dry before applying the next.

Smooth the sealant.

Smooth the sealant using a gloved finger. This will help create an even finish and remove any excess sealant. Avoid direct contact with the skin as the sealant can be difficult to remove. 

Wipe away any excess sealant with a clean cloth.

Step 6

Remove the masking tape.

Remove the masking tape immediately after smoothing the sealant. This will prevent the sealant from sticking to the tape and creating an uneven finish.

Allow the sealant to dry completely before using the surface.
