some parts of my lawn (in the sun) look very lush.  The undergrowth in shady areas is brown.  Do I need to cut down my trees to promote sun exposure?

Re: buffalo problem

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @andii. It's amazing to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about grass health.

It sounds like your buffalo grass is struggling in the shaded areas due to lack of sunlight, as buffalo grass typically thrives in full sun. If the trees have a dense canopy, thinning out some of the branches might allow more light to reach the grass, without the need to remove the trees entirely. This would let you maintain the shade and the trees' benefits while improving your lawn’s health.

Alternatively, you could consider extending the garden bed over these areas and planting shade-tolerant ground covers instead of trying to grow grass there. It’s always best to preserve trees if possible, so thinning them might be a good compromise. Here's a helpful guide: How to choose plants for a shaded area.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
