I found this bench for free on Gumtree and thought I would be able to easily sand a lot of the paint off to smooth it and then paint it again. Once I got the bench home I realised that most of the timbers were rotten and it needed a much bigger overhaul.
I removed all the timbers, painted the cast iron legs with Metal shield and then replaced the timber slats with DAR Tasmanian oak. Three coats of marine varnish to finish and this bench is ready for many years to come!
What a neat project, @makingmyhive! I love it when someone takes an old item and gives it a new lease on life. With your efforts, I trust this seat will get great use for many more years to come.
Great choice on using the Tassie Oak as it looks a treat offset against the black legs.
Well done, and many thanks for sharing.
