G'day team, hope you are all well.
I've just built our sunken plunge pool and paved around it, and I am now looking for some hardy medium to large sizeable pretty pot plants to compliment the surrounding environment. I love anything with big green and coloured leaves, and as they will all be in pots, I'm guessing that selection is pretty broad. I attract mosquitos like crazy, so something that will ward these away would also be great.
Additionally, the pool is 90% covered by dark UV resistant sun shade sail, so I'm guessing plants that wouldn't usually be in direct sunlight could work, i.e. aspidistras, palms, monsteras?
Thanks guys, any suggestions greatly appreciated, cheers!
Glenn
Could you please also tell us where you are based Glenn? (@snowgoose62)
It might help members suggest the best plants for your area.
Thanks,
Jason
Ah yes that was dumb hey? I'm in Perth, so quite arid in summer, although we are starting to gradually get more humid
All good, thanks @snowgoose62.
Let me tag helpful member @mich1972 for her thoughts on suitable plants.

Hi Glenn (@snowgoose62),
Your sunken plunge pool sounds fantastic, and the shaded environment is perfect for lush, tropical plants.
For height and a tropical vibe, consider palms like Kentia (Howea forsteriana) or Golden Cane (Dypsis lutescens), both thriving in indirect light.
Monstera deliciosa is also a great choice for its striking, large leaves, while Calatheas and Cordylines will add vibrant patterns and pops of colour.
Hardy options like Zanzibar Gem (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) and Rubber Plants (Ficus elastica) are ideal for low-maintenance greenery.
To deter mosquitoes, try lemongrass, or mint, which also double as culinary herbs.
Ensure pots have good drainage, use high-quality potting mix with slow-release fertilizer, and group plants with similar care needs for easier maintenance.
Rotate them occasionally for even growth, and you'll have a lush, mosquito-free tropical oasis in no time.
Let me know if you’d like more advice.

Many thanks, Jacob; this will be very helpful to you. Here is the area, which is not quite finished yet. Some greenery will sure soften and make it more welcoming, cheers
Hi @snowgoose62,
This looks like a fantastic space to relax on those hot Perth days.
I can't wait to see it once it's completed, and you've got some plants in place.
