What is the term for semi-ringbarking a tree?

what is the appropriate term for semi-ringbarking a tree twice - going halfway around the trunk and then repeating it at a different level but on opposite side?

Re: semi-ringbarking

Hello @jonl

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us and thanks for sharing your question about ringbarking.

The technique you're describing is known as "girdling" or "partial girdling" when done in sections. When you girdle a tree partially by going halfway around the trunk at one level and then repeating the process at a different level on the opposite side, it can be referred to as "staggered girdling" or "half-girdling". This method is sometimes used in forestry or orchard management to control growth, increase fruit production, or manage invasive species. It's important to perform this technique carefully, as improper girdling can severely harm or kill a tree.

Let me call on our plant guru @Noelle for their opinion.

Re: semi-ringbarking

Spot on, @EricL !  The only caution is to ensure the girdle is not cut so deep that it completely cuts off the sap flow between roots and upper growth. This occurs in the green wood immediately below the bark. That's why staggered girdling is the preferred option.
