What hedge options for a narrow boulder retaining wall strip?

Hi, I would appreciate some budget friendly ideas for this area in my backyard. It’s a narrow area on a height so trimming and looking after would involve climbing. I am looking for ideas to spruce up this place.

Any suggestion that is low budget for a hedge plant that would gain some height and needs very low maintenance

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @sarahebenezer. It's wonderful to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about selecting hedging.

For the narrow area above your boulder retaining wall, where maintenance can be tricky due to the slope, selecting low-maintenance, drought-tolerant plants that provide some screening is a smart choice. One excellent option is the Lilly Pilly (Acmena smithii 'Minor'), a popular native Australian plant that grows relatively quickly and forms a dense hedge. It’s easy to care for once established and requires only occasional pruning to keep it at the desired height. Another great option is Westringia (Westringia fruticosa), also known as Coastal Rosemary. This hardy native thrives in poor soils and coastal environments, making it perfect for exposed areas. It forms a neat, dense hedge with very little care needed.

For some added colour, Bottlebrush (Callistemon ‘Little John’) is a smaller variety of bottlebrush that produces striking red flowers and requires minimal maintenance. It grows well in both full sun and partial shade, making it quite adaptable. Lastly, Nandina (Nandina domestica ‘Gulf Stream’) is a low-maintenance shrub with vibrant foliage that changes colour through the seasons. It offers visual interest without demanding too much care, making it another great choice for your slope. All of these plants are budget-friendly and ideal for sprucing up your space while keeping maintenance to a minimum.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Hi Mitchell,

Thank you so much for your suggestions. Are the Westringia (Westringia fruticosa), also known as Coastal Rosemary also suited for northern suburbs(Eatons Hill).

Sarah

Re: What hedge options for a narrow boulder retaining wall strip?

Yes, Westringia fruticosa (Coastal Rosemary) is a great choice for Eatons Hill in Queensland @sarahebenezer. This hardy native thrives in subtropical climates, tolerating heat, drought, and coastal winds. It prefers well-drained soil and grows well in both full sun and partial shade, making it ideal for the area's conditions. Just avoid planting in waterlogged areas.
