Hi folks,
I noticed brown spots on my tomatoes. The upper leaves, but just a few, also wilt. Not all my tomato plants are affected, just a couple.
Cheers
Hello @sabina
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your tomato plant.
The brown spots on your tomatoes, accompanied by wilting upper leaves, could be a sign of a common fungal disease like early blight or bacterial speck. Early blight often presents as brown spots with concentric rings on the leaves and fruit, while bacterial speck shows as small, dark spots on the fruit. Since only a few of your plants are affected, it's important to act quickly to prevent the spread.
To manage this issue, you can start by removing any affected leaves and fruits from the plants to reduce the source of infection.
Make sure to dispose of these properly and do not mix it in with the compost. For treatment, you could use a fungicide like Yates Liquid Copper Fungicide, which is available at the store. This product helps control fungal and bacterial diseases on a variety of plants, including tomatoes. Follow the label instructions carefully for the best results.
Additionally, try to water your tomato plants at the base rather than overhead to minimize moisture on the leaves, which can promote disease. Improving air circulation around the plants can also help reduce humidity and prevent further infections. Regularly monitoring your plants and maintaining good garden hygiene will be key in keeping your tomatoes healthy.
Please remember to wear personal protection such as gloves, goggles and a mask when using a chemical spray. Please make sure to follow all the safety guidelines printed at the back of the bottle.
