My Hardenbergia ha lots of yellowing leaves… I am in Sydney. Is this normal?
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @mg664 . It's sensational to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about Hardenbergia care.
Yellowing leaves on your Hardenbergia can be a sign of various issues, though some yellowing is normal, especially with seasonal changes. In Sydney, where the climate is generally suitable for Hardenbergia, common causes of yellowing include watering problems, nutrient deficiencies, and soil pH imbalance.
Both overwatering and underwatering can lead to yellow leaves, so it's important to ensure the soil is well-draining and to water the plant regularly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. A lack of essential nutrients, particularly nitrogen, can also cause yellowing, so applying a balanced fertiliser might help if the plant has been in the same soil for a while.
Additionally, Hardenbergia prefers slightly acidic to neutral soil, and if the pH is off, it can affect nutrient absorption. Temperature stress, from unusually cold or hot weather, can also lead to yellowing, as can pests or diseases like aphids, spider mites, or root rot caused by poor drainage. If the yellowing is minimal and the plant seems otherwise healthy, it may just be adjusting to seasonal changes.
I'd start by fertilising if you haven't done so and checking the soil's moisture. If it's overly dry or wet for long periods, then that would be something to try and correct by either watering more regularly or installing drainage.
