I want to replace my garden tap with this Brasshards Dual MI Hose Tap 15mm Brass (or 20mm version).
Not sure if my outlet is 15mm or 20mm, so I guess the best way would be to remove the existing tap at take it in store to check the sizing, is that right? Also, it appears the Brasshards only comes as a male connection, but looks like my existing tap is a female - so does that mean it is not an option for me, or does it need and adaptor?
More generally, these lever-type taps seem very convenient, but do they have any disadvantages? Would I be better off just adding a standard splitter like this Pope 2 Way Brass Threaded Tap ?
Hi @DonC,
Thank you for your question about replacing your existing single tap with a dual tap.
Remember to turn your water off at the water meter before removing and replacing your existing tap.
Yes, you are correct that removing the existing tap to determine the thread size is going to be necessary. Bringing the old tap in-store is also a good idea to ensure you get a match.
The simplest way to connect your new tap is to use a 15mm Brass Threaded Hexagon Socket or 20mm Brass Threaded Hexagon Socket depending on the thread size. Remember to use some thread seal tape to get a leakproof connection between the threads.
The only disadvantage I'm aware of with the lever-type taps is they are so easy to turn on, that it is much easier to accidentally turn them on in passing. This is a very minor thing, so it is not something I'd be particularly concerned about.
Let me know if you have any further questions.
