How to replace a chicken run fence

Good Morning Workshop Community Friends ! Hope you are all well, can’t believe it is December already. 

Our extended Chicken Run fence was just a quick set up of plastic trellis and stakes as we were not sure if it would be permanent. Unfortunately we have a rouge chicken who loves to escape and destroy the garden with her scratching. She’s had her wings clipped three times and still does a Houdini ! 
So it was well overdue to put up a new, higher, stronger fence. 

We used 1.8 metre Steel Posts, used a Post Driver to secure them into the ground. 
Galvanised Wire for extra support to attach the Chicken Wire too. 
Heavy Duty Chicken Wire 10 metre roll, 1.2 metre height. 
Cable Ties. 
Make sure to wear work gloves when working with Chicken wire fencing. Also, I used a few bricks and the wheelbarrow to hold down the fencing and stop it recoiling on me , that was fun and games 😆 It’s quite tricky but it was worth it. 

After completion, it’s so much sturdier, looks heaps better and NO escape attempts 🐓🐓 All materials were purchased from Bunnings. 

Steel Posts are in and galvanised wire run through them for extra support. You can see the old crappy plastic trellis here. 

 

 Really happy with this Heavy Duty

Chicken Wire, 10 metre roll , 1.2 metre in height. 

Galvanised Wire I used 

 

 I used bricks and the wheelbarrow to hold down the mesh to stop it recoiling itself. Please make sure you wear a sturdy pair of work gloves when using galvanised fencing. 

 

I added the fencing, section at a time and cable tied to the posts. You can use wire as well. 

 

 

Added another access gate using Reo Mesh

Finished and I removed the old fence 

Look at the lawn how the girls scratch the soil everywhere, also our rouge chicken scratching throughout the lawn when we are at work, very naughty 😂 

So what is next, adding some edging, I will share that soon and also fixing the lawn.

Thank you so much for posting photos of your chicken fence upgrade. It looks great and I'm sure it will keep the chickens from wandering into your garden. It looks like the chickens have cleared the ground area out very well, have you considered putting in some Richgro 40L Pine Bark Mulch to invite insects back into the area? This will keep them foraging and active inside the fenced space.

That really looks the part.

I kept chickens for a few years before I moved into town and yes they can be a bit of a handful, but there is nothing better than

eggs fresher than you get at the supermarket, especially for baking.

Hi Eric thank you. Hope you are well mate. No escaping now !! So I can plant my seedlings now !!! Looks heaps better too. 
I add lots of veggie scraps and garden waste into the Run and that encourages more worms and insects for the girls to nom on 😀🐓
