How to remove grass for tuscan topping outdoor area?

Hey team

Looking at starting a new project. Advise for preparing area to bring in a Tuscan topping covered area.

- kill with spray then cultivate?

- just cultivate?

Also: sandy loam under Sir Walter on clay base. Area = 3.5m x 5m

Any additional tips on how to prepare base for seating area also

Was also looking to upcycle materials where possible

Re: removing grass for tuscan topping outdoor area

Hi @amichaelmedia,

For the best results, I’d recommend digging up the grass rather than just spraying it, as this will help prevent any regrowth. Once the area is cleared, compact the base to create a firm foundation—Bunnings hires out compactors if you don’t have access to one. After that, lay down weed matting to help suppress any future weeds before spreading your toppings.

For the seating area, the preparation will depend on the height of what you're building. If it's a low seating area, you may be able to lay blocks with a mortar bed directly on the compacted ground. If it's taller or needs more structural integrity, pouring a concrete slab as a foundation would be the better option. Here's a helpful guide: How to pour a concrete slab.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Mitchell
