How to grow edibles in containers

Morning Workshop Community Friends. I love growing edibles in the garden but also been growing them in large pots.
One of the Raised Garden Planters I have  started, I’m super excited to share with you how easy it is to grow some seasonal vegetables and herbs.
I planted up this one about 4 weeks ago.

It’s one seedling  punnet of each - Eggplant Bonica , Cucumber Patio Snacker ( to cascade over the side ) and Sweet Basil as a Companion Plant to attract more Pollinators. Not only that, the strong scent of Basil will help deter insects. So far so good 😊 I have now added my trusty old clothes horse as a trellis support for the Cucumbers 😆 but you can just let them grow over the sides.
I planted up this bed with two bags of Baileys Premium Potting Mix which filled it up perfectly.  Using a Premium blend is the best start for Container growing.
As with all my edibles as I’m planting, I added a good couple of handfuls of Richgro Dolomite Lime to the soil. This is really important as they need Calcium.
I have been liquid feeding fortnightly with Charlie Carp.
These Raised Beds are great for small Courtyards , Small Backyards , Balconies. It’s even great if you just want to start off with a small project. I hand water it every day and on the hot days an extra water in the afternoons.
Everything purchased at Bunnings.

Re: How to grow Edibles in Containers

Sounds like an excellent option for balcony planting, @mich1972. I'm sure those living in apartments could grow a bountiful crop with only a few of these containers. A fantastic height, too, for anyone that struggles to get down on their knees to garden.

Many thanks for sharing.

Re: How to grow edibles in containers

Thanks  @Jason I love it and to share and inspire the Community to have a go at growing some edibles at home, especially for beginners 😃

We have started our heatwave today here in Perth, extremely hot all week !! So with that I must keep an eye on watering, mulching and adding another round of wetting agent to our soil.

Re: How to grow edibles in containers

Your plants look healthy and vibrant. Can you advise if the hollow legs on the planter are enough for drainage or did you add some more holes in the base? Many thanks!

Re: How to grow edibles in containers

Hello @tisonlyme

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. Thank you for joining the discussion.

Let me tag @mich1972 to make them aware of your question. I believe the holes at the legs are enough to drain out the entire container. However, I don't see anything wrong with adding extra drain holes for your planter except that it might become a weak point at the bottom of the container. I propose observing your plantation and if you feel that it is not draining fast enough, I recommend drilling only small holes with large gaps between them.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Re: How to grow edibles in containers

@tisonlyme  Hey there 😃 The legs draining freely which is great. Yes you can drill a few extra holes if you want but not really necessary.
I water it every morning, that’s really important. We are going into a heatwave this week, today was a shocker so I gave it an extra long water when I got home from work thus arvo.
