I have a gap between my fence and the timber sleepers in my backyard. I’m looking for the best way to fill or cover this space to improve the appearance and prevent debris buildup.
Note that the area is too deep to fill and soil is not an option as this is a retaining wall.
There isn’t enough space to add another sleeper, so I’m considering other options like gravel, timber fascia, or some kind of edging. Has anyone dealt with a similar issue? What worked best for you?
Thanks in advance for any advice!
Hello @Vismay
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your fence gap.
It appears that your builder has used a bit of the decking panel on the top of your retaining wall as a finishing cover. I suggest removing this cover and modifying it by adding another panel next to it. Once the modification is complete this new wide cover should be big enough to cover the gap between the fence and the retaining wall.
I don't recommend filling the gap with anything as this will become a moisture trap and will damage both the Colorbond fence and your retaining wall. My best advice would be to keep it clear and just cover it from above.

Hi @Vismay
First up I have to say I am seriously jealous of your lush green lawn!
I think the simplest solution to fill the gap would be with planting it out with small maintenance free shrubs. These would prevent debris etc falling down the gap and have a root system thats unobtrusive to cause any long term damage. Plus provide a nice green transition between the retaining wall and fence.
I would be seeking the advice for suitable plants to fill that space. @EricL maybe able to assist with one of the communities garden guru's

Morning @Vismay
My idea pretty much is along the same lines as @EricL's
Except I would be removing the top trim and replacing it with 140 x 19mm 5.7m SpecRite Merbau Joined Set Length Pre-Oiled Decking
The only thing Im not sure of is how much space is bewtten the existing retaining wall and the fence iteself. Im guessing that the 140mm width of the Merbau may be 30mm short. 😕

Hi @Dave-1 Thanks for your suggestions. The gap between retaining wall and the fence is approximately 380mm.
Hello @Vismay
If the gap is that big, I suggest using angle bracket supports along the length of the retaining wall to keep the top cover level.
