Re: Eggplants not growing

Hi @suni,

It sounds like the eggplants may need a bit more attention to get them growing. Could you share a bit more about your planting conditions? How much sunlight are they getting each day, and what’s your watering regime like? Also, have you been fertilizing them with anything other than organic manure, like a specific plant food or liquid fertilizer? That could help give them a boost.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Mitchell

Re: Eggplants not growing

I give water them regularly like thrice in a week in morning for 30 to 40 minutes , Use to put organic compost once in a month. I add dynamic lifter once in a month.

How much sunlight do they receive throughout the day, @suni?

Re: Eggplants not growing

Hello @suni

It sounds like you’ve been putting in a lot of effort with your eggplant, so it’s understandably frustrating that it’s still not growing properly or setting fruit. Even though you’ve added organic manure and Dynamic Lifter over time, the problem could be more about the growing conditions or balance of nutrients than just the fertiliser itself. Eggplants need at least six hours of full, direct sunlight to thrive, and if yours is only getting five—especially if it's morning or filtered light—it may simply not be enough. They really love strong, warm afternoon sun. I suggest moving it to a sunnier spot or see if there's a way to open it up to more light.

The fact that it’s flowering but the flowers are falling off usually points to a few issues. One big one is lack of pollination. Eggplants are self-pollinating, but they still need a bit of help, especially if there aren’t many bees or other pollinators around. You can try gently shaking the plant when it's flowering or use a soft paintbrush or cotton bud to transfer pollen from flower to flower—ideally in the morning when the pollen is freshest.

Another possibility is that there’s too much nitrogen in the soil from all the manure and Dynamic Lifter. Nitrogen helps plants grow lots of green leaves, but too much can stop fruiting. Try switching to a fertiliser that’s higher in potassium and phosphorus—something like PowerFeed Fruit & Flower or Richgro 2.5kg Potash Fruit And Flower Booster both available at Bunnings. These will support flowering and fruit production instead of just leafy growth.

Watering is another thing to keep an eye on. Eggplants don’t like to dry out completely, but they also hate soggy feet. Try to keep the soil evenly moist and use mulch to help regulate the moisture.

If the ground and the soil is heavy or clay-based, that could also restrict the roots. In that case, loosen the top layer of soil and top up with some compost and quality potting mix to help improve drainage and nutrients.

Lastly, if the plant has been sitting in the same spot for more than a season or isn’t growing much despite all your effort, it may be time to start fresh with a new eggplant in a sunnier location and improved soil.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Eric
