How to eliminate this weed vine/bush

Just moved into a new property. Any ideas on how to eliminate this vine bush growing along the full length of a long fence? Have been hacking at it for days, but it's coming under and over the fence, and there are multiple monsters like the one pictured where new growth is growing over dense masses of dead ones.

Re: How to eliminate this weed vine/bush

Hello @Kez4

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about the vine on your fence.

I'm sorry but it is very difficult to see the leaves of the hedge in order to make a proper identification. It will be necessary to get a closer photo of the leaves to get a more positive identification.

In the image, the plant looks overgrown with a significant amount of dead or woody growth in the lower section. This can happen if it hasn’t been pruned regularly, it appears to be very leggy as shown in the picture. If you’re looking to remove it, I suggest using a hedge trimmer to remove all of its branches so that you can access its main trunk. Please note that if the main trunk is in your neighbours side you can only trim it up to the property or fence line.

Once you have access to the main trunk, you'll need to use a chainsaw to cut the hedge properly. To prevent regrowth, I suggest looking at our best advice - How do you stop a tree stump regrowing? The techniques suggested will work on the stump of the hedge.

If you have any other questions we can help with, please let us know.

Eric
