How to calculate what skip bin size to hire?

Hi there. I’m looking to hire a skip bin with a lid (that I can padlock) for garden waste but have no idea what size I’d be after. I’ve attached photos of what’s waiting so far, not including the 9 x 150L bags, 6 x 60L flexi-tubs filled with mulch/wood chippings, and other bits and pieces that I was going to gradually dispose of via our regular council green bin. If they fit, I’d gladly empty the bags and tubs into the skip. I know it might be hard to tell from photos, but can anyone give me an indication of what size skip I might need? Thank you 😊

Re: skip bin size recs

Hello @Peachyspeechie

Okay, let's calculate the total volume of your garden waste, including the bags and the tubs.

  • Bags: You have 9 bags, each with 150 litres of waste. That's 9 x 150 = 1350 litres.

  • Tubs: You have 6 tubs, each with 60 litres of waste. That's 6 x 60 = 360 litres.

    Total: 1350 litres (bags) + 360 litres (tubs) = 1710 litres.

Now, let's convert that to cubic meters. Since 1000 litres equals 1 cubic meter, you have 1710 litres / 1000 litres/cubic meter = 1.71 cubic meters of garden waste. That's quite a bit of waste! To visualize it, imagine a cube roughly 1.2 meters long, 1.2 meters wide, and 1.2 meters high. Remember, this is an estimate. The actual space your waste occupies might be a bit different depending on the type of waste and how tightly it's packed. I estimate the remainder of the waste you have will fill another two cubic meters++ conservatively.

If you were to hire the stores For Hire: Mobile Skip 500kg Skip Bin - 3 Days it's 4 cubic meter capacity should be enough to fit the bags and tubs along with the remainder of your garden waste. My best advice is to hire a mulcher/shredder so that you can maximize the use of the skip.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Eric
