How to build Bunnings-style plant shelves with grates?

Hi,

I am looking to build some basic plant shelves. What i really want is something like the grated shelves on blocks Bunnings use for all of there plants like the picture i have attached. Do bunnings sell this grating? I  cant seem to find it.

Thanks

Re: Bunnings plant shelves

Hello @Gezza87

Thanks for sharing your question about building a shelf for your plants. I'm sorry but the metal shelves you're looking at is custom built for the store. They are large steel platforms heavily galvanized to withstand corrosion and daily exposure to water and soil.

It is possible to duplicate the look by using masonry blocks and ARC 3850mm x 2000mm x 6mm Reinforcing Ribbed Mesh. I highly recommend spraying cold galv on the mesh to prevent early deterioration.

If you have any other questions we can help with, please let us know.

Re: Bunnings plant shelves

Hi @Gezza87

You can go external to bunnings and find specialised metal merchants they may have the heavy grate system but it wont be cheap.

I have a couple of ideas for you to consider.

A   If you build your base out of free wooded pallets a double/ triple layer maybe Bunnings can help you with the at your local as it cost them rubbish fees on the non return  pallets.

Then cover the pallet in stiff wire mesh to cover the pallet slots to support potted plants sitting over a slot.

No need to paint them as if they rot just get new pallets to replace them in 5 years or so.

If you dont like looking at the base of the pallets skirt  them with shade cloth or black plastic over the  pallet tops.
