Home orchard

Hi Everyone, just rebuilding the home orchard after it burnt down in 2021..

I'm using retic poly to sheath the wire to protect the netting.  So I purchased 50m and 100m rolls of 13mm and 19mm retic black poly from Bunnings.  Just wanted to let you all know how disappointed I was to find the 100m roll 3m SHORT and ALL the 50m rolls were 1.5m SHORT.  Measurement taken properly using surveyor's measuring wheel. MAterials laid out in the sun to straighten and make it easier to run 50m plain wire through it.  This necessitated buying extra materials $$$, joiners and of course, Bunnings Midland wasn't interested in credits.   I would have had to roll everything up, go back to the shop, unroll multiple fresh rolls IN THE SHOP to check for correct length.   Just giving everyone a heads up to make sure you're not paying for what you're NOT getting.  Its been a real hassle and time-wasting to make extra trips because the packaging was short.

Materials

50m  and 100m rolls of 13mm black retic poly

50m and 100m rolls of 19mm black retic poly

of course  the extra joiners because of the above mentioned packaging "shortfall"

2.5mm plain high-tensile fence wire

Tools

My ute to get the extra materials because of the packaging "shortfall" (see above)

Box cutter knife

Hacksaw

Wire cutters

Leather gloves (wire was hot to work with)

Spinning jenny

Steps

Step 1

Laid out the black retic poly in the sun to get the coil twists out and straighten it to make it much easier to run the wire through

MEASURED the black poly when I discovered that I was unable to get 4 x 25m lengths out of a 100m roll.  Did the same checks on the 50m rolls and they were all short supplied.

Wasted time stopping the job, driving down the hill to Midland, spending EXTRA on materials, unhelpful staff, waited ages in the queue at the returns counter (for other stuff) because staff were too busy standing around in pairs talking with each other while customers waiting and 1 girl manning the counter on her own and doing a really lovely job of helping an elderly customer while her teammates ignored us.

Have run the wiring, now waiting for the EWP to come and then install the poletop caps, s/steel eyebolts (another story in itself) and eventual lifting up of the bird netting.   Have installed the repalcement posts and looking forward to cooler weather and new trees to plant come spring.  Hooray.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @mingo

I'm sorry to hear about your experience. If you could link me to the exact products you purchased, I'd like to follow this up with the supplier to ensure the product meets their specifications. There certainly shouldn't be a shortfall in the length supplied.

Re: Home orchard

Hi MITCHELMC,

Thanks for your message.

The products are by HOLMAN.  the 50m rolls of 19mm are your code 3120624 - PPH 1950.  I also purchased a 100m roll in December.

The same HOLMAN brand also supplied the 100m rolls of 13mm (0035966 - PPH 13100) black poly.

It was disappointing to be told to (waste my time) roll everything up and bring it back.  And then be told to unroll rolls INSIDE the shop to make sure I was getting what I am paying for.   As if I can unroll 100m of poly and deal with the stiff spirals amongst customers trying to push the horrible Bunnings cumbersome trolleys and not trip over all the clutter already in the aisles.   So watch out everyone, not only are you getting less than what you're paying for, then you're losing time and money travelling back for extra products and joiners to make up the shortfall.  $$$  Bunnings - where's your quality control?

I'll take this opportunity again to voice my contempt for the trolleys which are oversize, difficult for the elderly, take up too much room in the aisles (which are already squeezed up with floor displays) and a trip hazard with that giant flat area protruding past the basket area.  One size does not fit all Bunnings, we don't all need a giant trolley - how about some common sense please and respect for the elderly, infirm and parents trying to juggle kids.
