Can you paint a plastic pot?

hi , I have bought so many plant pots only to find they are too small once the plant needs repotting. I was wondering if I could paint the bigger plastic pot and not poison the plant in it

Re: plant pots

Hello @Moragajagga

In theory, yes you can paint up to the soil level of the pot. However, the drawback is that the soil will continually be in contact with the painted part of the pot. This plus the heavy moisture of the soil will deteriorate the paint a lot faster. Putting in ornamental plants is ok, but, I don't recommend using edible plants as paint chips from the paint could mix into the soil of the pot.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Re: plant pots

Hi @Gayleis,

Thank you for your question.

You can certainly paint the outside of concrete pots but if the inside of the pot is not sealed, water can pass through the concrete and cause flaking and damage to the paint on the outside of the pot.

You can line the inside of the pot with GRUNT 2 x 5m Black 70um Multi Use Plastic Film so moisture is not in direct contact with the concrete.

Start by giving the surface you want to paint a good clean with warm soapy water and a brush to remove any dirt or contaminants that can affect adhesion.

Allow to dry, then apply a coat of Dulux 1Step Prep Primer, Sealer & Undercoat

Allow the coat of primer to dry before applying an external paint such as Dulux Weathershield in a colour and gloss level of your choosing.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Jacob
