How to install guttering on garage?

1000009441.jpg

The photo above is where I want to install basic guttering, just wondering what products I need to install guttering to the end of this garage roof. This is the lowest side of the garage roof

It's just a temporary fix as we plan to upgrade the garage sometime in the next few years. So I don't need a lifelong fix or want top of the range.    I have the downpipe sorted already, just need to know if I can install guttering to the roof as it is, and how to attach it.       Many thanks!

Afternoon @rebelliouskiwi

I have the same issue and have been lazy in installing the gutter to my deck

You need a facia/header board that you attach to the end of your rafters that you can see. You could screw straight through the facia/header board into the ends of the rafters or if they have perished a bit too much you could screw to the side a new piece of wood that ends flush with the end of the rafter.

Then depending on what style of guttering you want you install some guttering clips Gutter Brackets & Clips The fall off the gutter dosnt have to be steep, just has to drop consistantly. I would mark on the facia with a pencil, string line across the width of the building and mark again on the facia board. Then drop one side by 2cm and draw a straight line between the marks to get the fall of the gutter.

Factor in where you want your downpipe and where the water will be exiting to. I have seen funky chains hang where a downpipe would normally be and think they look great but not sur eif I trustthem to work

Oh one last thing, if you are going to fill between the rafters it will be easier to do before you put up any facia/header boards.

Re: How to install guttering on garage?

Hello @rebelliouskiwi

It's great that you've received excellent advice from @Dave-1. His description of what you needed to do is exactly what I had in mind. My best advice is to double check the health of those rafters, if it appears that they have been seasoned too much, I propose cutting the damaged parts off and replacing it with a new piece.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Re: How to install guttering on garage?

Hi @rebelliouskiwi

I see @Dave-1 has provided excellent advice on this project. Just to add, the facia board you will need is this one. You can also buy shorter lengths and thinner ones, which maybe more easier to handle when installing.

Fix the facia board to the last roof joist and each rafter with 75mm batten screws after pre-drilling the holes in the facia. This will allow you to easily remove it again. make sure you prime the ends of any cuts in the facia you make. This video will show how to position the b rackets and install the guttering.
