The project

Thought I'd share the next phase of my fence makeover project – a vertical herb garden.

To create the vertical garden, we installed three of the Whites Outdoor 'Garden Up' vertical garden kits to the fence with screws. Apart from ensuring it all lined up with the fence panelling, it was quick and easy to do.

I then filled the pots with small herb plants – tarragon, mint, Vietnamese basil, chives, parsley, thyme, sage and coriander. The wall is west facing and is protected slightly by our neighbour's huge lemon tree. 

Happy to report that, after a few months, the herbs are all still alive apart from coriander, which I've never successfully grown.

The project cost around $300 all up and has made a huge difference to the boring fence.

I'm new to the Bunnings Workshop community (and also very new to D.I.Y!) Your fence makeover looks great!! I especially like the dark coloured acrylic planter boxes, however I can't see any mention of where you got those. Are you willing to share the secret 😉? @KingStreetReno has used the Garden Up system for this project, and the planters from it are these Whites 495mm Charcoal Outdoor Garden Up Classic Pots.

It's great to see that you've been inspired to build your own vertical herb garden. If you are hanging this on an existing timber fence, I suggest using Whites Garden Up 90 x 50cm Mesh Grid. This provides an easy to install hanging spot for the Whites Outdoor Garden Up Classic Slat Hook. It also makes it easy to re-arrange the position of the Whites 495mm Charcoal Outdoor Garden Up Classic Pot. However, if you wish to fix the position of the hooks, I recommend using Whites Outdoor Black Garden Up Classic Wall Hook. These can be screwed directly into your timber fence with no extra parts needed other than the fixing screws.

In order to create a single row with three levels you would need the following:

• Whites Garden Up 90 x 50cm Mesh Grid (1x)
   
• Whites Outdoor Garden Up Classic Slat Hook (6x)
   
• Whites 495mm Charcoal Outdoor Garden Up Classic Pot. (3x)
