A floating shelf is a fantastic way to add storage and an attractive feature to any room.
The project
I’ve wanted to make this shelf for ages but kept putting it off. I was surprised at how easy it was.
Using my spirit level, I checked all was good to go and then attached two pieces of pallet timber on the top and bottom, then finished with one piece at the front. I prefer the floating look. Great way to add some storage and also a nice feature.
As the supports are hidden, I just used leftover cut offs – MGP10 untreated structural pine from Bunnings 90 x 45mm. I used two wooden supports and made sure I screwed them into the studs for stability. For extra support, I screwed two pieces of timber cut offs underneath the top shelf.
More floating shelves
Using leftover fence pickets and the top from her original desk, Tara also built floating shelves and a new desk for her daughter’s room to match her black loft bed.
Workshop member Pete built this custom floating timber shelf for his son’s nursery that sits above an antique dresser perfectly colour matched to the wallpaper on the opposite wall.
To add a little something to this corner workstation, Workshop member Hazel built a floating shelf by sliding a custom plywood box over an E bracket to host the family’s collectables.
