This sleek console table was made from Acacia project panels, and the leftover timber was used to make a dolly for a PC tower.
I had some special needs for home electronics and, inspired by Bunnings' "industrial" D.I.Y. style, I decided to start my very first D.I.Y. furniture project – an industrial style console table.
I spent weeks learning the basics online, sketching out my design and planning the project, as well as an entire day buying tools and materials at Bunnings. I intentionally left wood shopping to last because I thought "Hey, wood panels are heavy!"
I wanted the SpecRite 1800mm x 405mm x 18mm Brown Acacia oiled hardwood panel, and I planned to have Bunnings cut the panels to size for me.
I hit a roadblock when I learned that Bunnings couldn't actually cut the panels because of the way they are made, but I was able to keep going thanks to MitchellMc, who gave me some great advice.
I ended up borrowing a friend's circular saw. I did have to tape the cutting line a couple layers to prevent surface wood splitting at the end of each cut, but otherwise it's very much OK. There were a few imperfections but nothing some wood filler and a piece of sandpaper couldn't fix.
I initially thought I was going to be OK with the finish that come on the wood, but I ended up hating its roughness. I spent another couple of days researching wood finish and eventually settled on Feast Watson Black Hard Wax. I'm loving the result!
I had some excess wood so made a dolly for my PC tower. I didn't bother to refinish it but i might do that later.
