D.I.Y. timber plant stand

The project  

I couldn’t find a plant stand that was the height or look I wanted so it was Bunnings to the rescue again!

I cut the timber myself after I got a great deal at Bunnings on a cheap mitre saw. You can also get Bunnings to cut the timber to size. I measured my width based on my pot plant size and used premium pine to keep the cost down.

I realised half-way through that the tall stand would need a secondary support at the bottom, so I ended up doing a cross-lap joint on both.

 

It's actually a really easy first D.I.Y. project and you don't need any fancy electric tools. The only thing you really need is a hacksaw and chisel to do the cross-lap joint. If you don't mind using just nails rather than dowels for putting it together, it's super easy!

This is just what I'm looking for... I have an old wrought iron saucepan stand which I was hoping to use as a plant stand, but it doesn't support the small pots I have very well. So, this plant stand looks just the ticket and I'll get the reward of building it myself. Thank you for the detailed build instructions and photos!

Thanks for your message mate. I'm just about to jump in the car to drive 33k's to my closest Bunnings to get this gear, so your message was very timely 🤣

The plant stand is to be for my herbs, which will be on my north facing deck. I'm happy to either paint or stain it. The pictures of the existing wrought iron stand and the plants in their new pots are below.

JasonI used old saucepans to start with...But now have these lovely self watering pots. I am still waiting to see them take themselves off to the tap hahaha.

I love that stand @BoeingFan! Do you think you could cut out some plywood into the same triangular central shape to provide a more stable surface for the pots? It would be great to use the stand if you could.

Yes, I'd suggest marine ply @BoeingFan and maybe a can of black spray paint to coat the shapes. Do you have a jigsaw to cut out the shapes?

Hi @MitchellMc ,

Yep I do have a jigsaw, albeit a recalcitrant one 😁 I've just chopped of a couple of pine paling squares with my drop saw and put the plants on the stand, and sadly the stand is too short between shelves to fit comfortably fit herbs much higher than about 15cm, so I'm happy to keep the stand but I'll get some other plants for it.

I'll grab some timber next time I'm in town and see if I can put something together that resembles a plant stand 🤣
