The project

Here's what I do to protect our garden plants from chickens.

The Diamond Econetting is from Bunnings and is left over from covering fruit trees. Bamboo stakes hold it up in some beds and two pieces of crossed-over PVC pipe is used in one bed.

For beds with wooden borders, I secured the net to screws that stick out by half around the edges.

All materials are from Bunnings, including chicken wire, sugar cane mulch, wood chips, decking boards, fence palings, stain and all screws.

A wire fence runs from our alfresco to the back fence to divide our chickens from the dog's side of the yard. Lemon, mulberries, thornless blackberry and passion fruit are used to soften the impact of the wire divide. As you can see, everything is protected from our free-ranging chickens. It also works as a great barrier against cabbage moth and birds.

Workshop member Caron built this incredible chicken coop with cafe blind, verandah and screening for extra weather protection.

Workshop member Tim built an enclosure around this coop so his chickens can roam free while keeping safe from predators and out of the garden.
