This complete backyard makeover turned a tired yard into an attractive and functional outdoor living area.
The backyard hadn't had a lot of TLC since we moved in but I finally procured all my timber and tools and got ready to start. Cheers for the inspo from other Bunnings Workshop members.
I drew up a design for the area, including a multi-level wooden deck.
I decided to use the Good Times Decking modular frame but cut my own boards.
The frames went together relatively well. I had to shorten some but I worked this into a design feature.
It was my first time getting hands-on with my brand-new circular saw. I quickly got the hang of it.
Then I realised I had used the wrong screws for the bottom walkway part – frame screws instead of deck screws.
I started removing the screws but half-way through I also realised the lower tier was taking over the backyard. I decided to remove it completely, replacing it with lawn and pavers, which you step on to from the second tier.
I also built an outdoor breakfast bar at the top of the stairs.
As well as a feature wall with Matrix screen panels.
And solar backlighting.
And an enclosure to screen the hot-water tank.
The lawn and plants have settled in well. We've also entertained some friends and family and we definitely love how it feels out here.
A low-level deck can pose a range of potential design and installation problems, with challenges around ventilation, drainage, termites and rot. But it doesn't have to be a difficult project once you take the time to understand the basics of how a low-level deck is put together.
