A backyard was transformed with a garden bed for vegetables and firepit seating using Treated Pine, Merbau decking, new trees and turf.

The project

After building our deck last year, it took me another year to finally start and finish our backyard. We have a small space available so I had to utilise every corner to have a fire pit area and a vegetable garden area as well.

Steps

Step 1

This is our backyard right after we moved in two years ago.

Step 2

Even though we only have a small space, still lots of preparation and planning took place and it took me around two months to finish.

Step 3

I've built garden beds for the olive trees and a raised garden bed for my vegetables. I also added a plastic greenhouse I've bought from Bunnings to increase the space, that I can use for my plants and vegetables. All dwarf trees (lime, lemon, mandarin, cumquat) are planted in pots to avoid any issues with our fence and to maintain their sizes. I have also laid instant turf (Tiftuf hybrid bermuda).

Step 4

As for the fire pit area, I've built the benches (using treated timber and Merbau deck boards). I've built a small two-tier bench with timber posts for my festoon lights. I added solar lights and plants as well to make the space cosy.

Great makeover - It's day and night between before and after. Huge fan of clearly zoning the two main areas !!!

Kind of a Big Deal

Hi @frediynewbie

What a terrific and functional use of the space, and I love the garden lightning. Congratulations.

Just Starting Out

looks great! I was wondering what the two big erect posts were for? then I saw your lights hanging from them. it's a great idea to erect something especially for outdoor lights! mine keep falling off their hooked-in-ness when we have storms. I'll have to get hubby to build me something like this
