How do you seal and draught-proof a sash window?

SashWindow.jpegSealing and draught-proofing sash windows is essential for improving energy efficiency and comfort in older homes.

The first step is to identify where the draughts are entering by holding a piece of tissue paper against the internal frame on a breezy day. If the paper moves, you've found a draught.

To address this, you can use self-adhesive brush seals, such as the Moroday 6 x 7mm x 5m Black MWS8, which can be stuck to the back of the inside trim frame and along the bottom sill to seal prominent gaps. Rubber seals or weather stripping are also effective, especially for larger gaps around the window frame.

For smaller cracks, silicone sealant can be applied carefully without sealing the window shut. Here's a helpful step-by-step guide covering how to apply silicone sealant. If you have windows that don't need to be opened, duct tape can serve as a temporary measure.

Regularly check and replace the seals as needed, and consider additional insulation measures like heavy, blockout curtains for better heat retention.
