Hello all,
we are redoing the laundry using Kaboodle cabinets and new sink.
We are getting some open shelves custom made for the wall.
The plan was to remove the tiles are repaint, but they are attached to gyprock and the gyprock will need replacing after tiles come off. Quite expensive.
Plan B is to use cladding as splashback, flush with the wall.
but how do i make the washing machine tubes and taps accessible if i use cladding?
Is patching the broken gyprock my only option?
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @QueenMab. It's wonderful to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about installing cladding in the laundry.
Using cladding as a splashback can be a good solution, but you’re right to think about how it will affect your washing machine taps. Depending on the thickness of the cladding, it might make it difficult to re-install the taps in their current position. In this case, a plumber would need to reposition the wall fittings, bringing them out further to suit the new cladding depth.
Also, it’s important to keep in mind that, according to the Building Code of Australia, splashbacks in wet areas need to be waterproof. If you're considering timber cladding, you’ll want to ensure it complies and, if so, is treated or sealed appropriately to prevent moisture damage.
Patching the gyprock is also an option, but it can be tricky to get a smooth finish. However, it is something you could D.I.Y. if you're on a budget. In this guide on How to renovate a European-style laundry, you'll see the repair of plasterboard that was damaged by the removal of tiles.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
