Hi Brains trust
We were going to tile our bathroom walls and have changed our minds. We want to plasterboard over the fibre cement sheeting on the walls, how do we do that. Or is it easy to get a nice finish using plasterboard mud? I can tape and nud plasterboard, but ive never done cement sheeting.
Hi @handiher19,
You can use Aquacheck plasterboard in a bathroom as it’s designed for wet areas, and finishing the joints follows the same process as in other rooms. This makes achieving a smooth, professional finish relatively straightforward if you’re experienced with taping and plastering plasterboard. Here's the installation guide. Bear in mind that the plasterboard must be tiled for the shower recess.
However, it’s worth noting that plasterboard is typically installed directly onto timber or metal studs as per the manufacturer’s guidelines. Installing it over existing fibre cement sheeting would be a deviation from these recommendations and might compromise your warranty if issues arise later. Additionally, you’ll need to consider how this change impacts the thickness of your walls, including allowances for fixtures and fittings.
It's also essential to consult with the professional handling your waterproofing. Installing plasterboard over cement sheeting could create challenges for them, such as ensuring the waterproofing membrane is applied correctly and maintains compliance with Australian standards.
If you decide to go ahead, ensure the cement sheeting is clean, dry, and securely fastened. You may need to use adhesive and screws to attach the plasterboard, ensuring it is firmly fixed. Discussing your plans with your waterproofing expert and checking the compatibility with your chosen materials will help avoid complications.
