Which floor levelling compound before laying tiles?

I have an old Queenslander house. I have sanded the bathroom floor prior to glueing down and nailing Hardies tile underlay. Which self levelling compound would be best to use in this situation prior to laying ceramic floor tiles? Thank You

Re: Floor levelling compound

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @Trevor572. It's marvellous to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about levelling a floor.

Could you provide a bit more detail on the height discrepancy you're looking to address? Specifically, what is the difference in height between the lowest and highest points of the floor? This will help me recommend the best self-levelling compound suitable for those heights.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Mitchell

Re: Floor levelling compound

Hi Mitchell.

The area that I'm concerned about drops away 12mm over a distance of 1800mm.

Re: Floor levelling compound

Hello @Trevor572

For a bathroom floor with a 12mm drop over 1800mm, using a self-levelling compound is a great idea to create a flat surface before tiling or finishing. The store carries several self-levelling compounds that would suit this purpose, such as Dunlop 20kg Ardit Floor Leveller, which is specifically designed for interior applications. It’s ideal for levelling uneven concrete or screed surfaces and can handle thin to moderate depth adjustments.

To address your situation, you’d need to mix the self-levelling compound according to the manufacturer’s instructions and pour it starting at the low point (the area with the 12mm drop), allowing it to flow naturally to level out the surface. Since the drop is relatively minor, one application should suffice, but double-check the product’s maximum thickness per layer.

For best results, clean the surface thoroughly beforehand and use a primer, such as Dunlop Multipurpose Primer, to ensure the compound bonds well to the existing substrate. If the floor is extremely uneven or has other complexities, it might be worth consulting with a tiling professional.

If you have any other questions we can help with, please let us know.

Eric
