What sealant for the joints in shower area?

Gyprock Wet Area Base Coat + Tape vs Crommelin Bond Breaker Sealant for the joints in shower area?

As the title, I just removed old shower and replaced damaged Villaboard, which will then be waterproofed and tiled.I couldn't decide which method is better. Thanks in advanced.

Re: What sealant for the joints in shower area?

Hi @charlie0123,

For the verticle corners, you'd use the Crommelin 300ml Hybrid MS Polyurethane Sealant. For any horizontal joints, you butt the sheets hard up against each other. Your waterproofer will then come in, and apply the membrane over the verticle and horizontal joints. A bandage will be laid over them, and waterproofing will be applied over the whole area.

Joint sealant is not required for the horizontal joints, and joints are not set with a base coat in a shower area under tiles.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Re: What sealant for the joints in shower area?

Thanks, Mitchell.

There is no horizontal joint in the middle of the shower wall. I should have uploaded a photo.

The Crommelin product you mentioned is the same one as I intended to use.

Also, I was wondering if I can use the Bluetape to close the holes in the wall around the plumbing as well as using Basecoat to cover the nail heads.

Re: What sealant for the joints in shower area?

Hi @charlie0123,

As per page 16 of the Wet Area construction guide, your Polyurethane sealant should be used to create a seam between the tiles and tap body. Since you have a reasonably large gap, you might like to push some filler rod around the tap body and deeper in than the surface of the Villaboard. This will provide backing for applying your sealant.

I wouldn't suggest using the blue tape, as Hardies does not recommend using it in their construction guide.
