Re: Toilet type?

Hi @Else,

Thanks an S-trap toilet. However, it looks like someone has grafted a pipe (the one coming from the wall) directly into the S-trap outlet of the toilet, which is definitely unusual. Based on the setup, it’s likely that the extra pipe is carrying grey water from another fixture nearby, such as a bathroom basin or a laundry tub. Instead of running a separate drainage line into the main sewer connection, they’ve tapped it into the toilet waste line, which really isn’t best practice and wouldn’t meet modern plumbing standards.

There are a few issues with this kind of arrangement. First, the connection might not be properly vented, which can cause drainage problems like slow draining or siphoning of water from traps. It also creates a risk of sewage smells or even backflow if the seal between the two pipes deteriorates. The join itself looks quite rough and improvised, which increases the chances of leaks over time.

If you’re planning any renovations or updates in this bathroom, I’d strongly recommend getting a licensed plumber to take a look. They would be able to advise on properly rerouting the drainage lines to meet current standards.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Mitchell

Re: Toilet type?

That's really helpful. Thanks Mitchell!

I'm definitely getting a plumber around to replace the toilet but I was wondering what kind I could replace it with if I'm not doing a full bathroom renovation atm.

For example, could I use a close-coupled or back to wall toilet or will I need to use sthg similar to the original? Ir is too hard to say with just the photos?

As for the original toilet, is that what's known as a 'connector link'?

Any more thoughts/advice gratefully received!

Re: Toilet type?

You can replace the toilet with any number of S-trap options @Else. Some of those include close-coupled S-trap toilets such as the Estilo Close Coupled Rimless S Trap Toilet Suite WELS 4 Star 4.5L/Full. Also, a back-to-wall toilet is an option, too. However, what determines whether it will be a direct replacement is how far the floor outlet is from the wall. For instance, the mentioned toilet needs the centre of the outlet to be 140mm from the wall. There's typically a small adjustment allowance on that. So, if you do want a close-coupled toilet, you need one that matches your outlet distance from the wall.

Yes, the style of toilet you currently have is commonly referred to as a connector link.

Your plumber will likely be able to guide you on suitable options. We do have a Toilet Installation Service, but it's generally a like-for-like replacement, and you're going to need some more work done to accommodate this additional pipe work.
