My sincere apologies! I have misinterpreted @chengjianer's photo above thinking the original rubber was shaped like mine but he was trying to insert the traditional O-ring style as a replacement.

I have heard of them and I think I tried them in the past. I now see the small hole and a much better riveting system than mine.
I was thinking we could lube up the appropriately sized O-ring with paraffin and position it between soft aluminium - and squeeze into place with a vice. Have you tried that?
I'll buy a couple of hydroseals over the weekend - and give it a go.
