How to unclog blocked toilet and bathroom sink?

Recently, I've been dealing with a nightmare of a blocked toilet. Last night, I inserted a hose about 1.5 to 2 meters into the pipe and let it run for about 30 minutes. During this process, there was no sign of a blocked pipe as the water flowed smoothly without any overflow. However, as soon as I flushed, the water drained very slowly, filling all the way to the top of the toilet bowl. I'm also experiencing a similar issue with the bathroom sink. I can hear air popping out from the other whenever I use either the toilet or the bathroom sink. I've included more details in the images and video, as well as the products I've used so far from Bunnings. I am confused and don't know how to fix this anymore. Any suggestions?

Re: How to unclog blocked toilet and bathroom sink?

Hi @MrConfused,

You might like to try a drain auger, but apart from that, it could be time to call in a plumber. Those products will work on a variety of materials, but they won't shift tree roots. Tree roots can infiltrate and block sewage pipes through a process known as root intrusion. This occurs when tree roots, seeking water and nutrients, grow towards and into underground pipes. Older terracotta pipes are particularly susceptible to root intrusion as they have joints that leak moisture with age every meter. The property I'm in has older pipes and requires a yearly clear-out by a professional. Surprising the nearest tree is over 30 metres from the pipes yet still manages to penetrate them with roots.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Re: How to unclog blocked toilet and bathroom sink?

Will a drain auger do the job when high-pressured hot water from a hose doesn't seem to help? I'm puzzled because the blockage only occurs when flushing, not when running water through the pipes with a hose. Any insights or suggestions?

Re: How to unclog blocked toilet and bathroom sink?

The water from the hose won't break up stubborn blockages, whereas the auger might @MrConfused. It won't get through tree roots, unless they are very fine, though.

A toilet cistern dumps 4/6 litres of water into the bowl relatively quickly. Even with the hose of full blast, it's not delivering close to that. The drain might be allowing the water from the hose to get through, but when the higher volumn from the cistern enters it backfills.

Re: How to unclog blocked toilet and bathroom sink?

I forgot to mention that when I fill up the toilet bowl with water from the hose, it still fills up all the way to the top, only running smoothly when the hose is inside the pipe.

What's your recommendation on these two products?

1. [Gerni 15m Drain and Tube Cleaner](https://www.bunnings.com.au/gerni-15m-drain-and-tube-cleaner_p0235557)
2. [Plunger The Great HandiHome Toilet Unblocker GP101](https://www.bunnings.com.au/plunger-the-great-handihome-toilet-unblocker-gp101_p4900048)

Re: How to unclog blocked toilet and bathroom sink?

The Gerni attachment would likely work on most blockages that weren't tree roots @MrConfused. The limiting factor is whether you'll reach the blockage with the 15m length. The plunger would probably be a bit better than the pump-style one you're currently using.

Re: How to unclog blocked toilet and bathroom sink?

Hi mate,

Just seen you post while searching on google.

May I know if you have found a solution?

I have 3 toilets in my home and 2 of them are blocked.  Water is draining very slow.

While using other sinks in the house, bubbles coming out in the toilets, please let me know if you found the problem.

I have tried many products but no luck yet.

I'll try with the hose today.

Thank you

Re: How to unclog blocked toilet and bathroom sink?

Hello @arshmuglani

Thanks for sharing your question about your clogged toilet. If you've tried many products and none of them work, I propose engaging the services of a drain inspection specialist. They will be able to see what's actually blocking your toilet and if it is tree roots, they'll need to use a drain root cutter. The pipework will need to be treated or replaced to prevent regrowth. Let me tag @MrConfused to make them aware of your question. It would be interesting to find out if they managed to clear the blockage.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Re: How to unclog blocked toilet and bathroom sink?

Hi @EricL

Thanks for your reply mate.

This is a brand new house mate, just got keys 6 weeks ago.

Builder says  his responsibility is only upto 4 weeks and I have to sort it out now.

My situation is very similar to @MrConfused as I have seen bubbles coming out in the sinks and other toilet.

Just wanna try less expensive solution before engaging a specialist.

I am thinking of toilet auger.

That might help.

Thank you

Re: How to unclog blocked toilet and bathroom sink?

Hello @arshmuglani

A toilet auger might work, but I also suggest using a Kinetic Suction Pump Drain Cleaner Multi Size as an alternative means of unblocking the toilet.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.
