How to replace old shower arm with new shower/hose combination?

01_ShowerDiverter.jpg02_OldShowerArm.jpg03_ShowerHeadInstructions.jpg

Hi, I'm attempting to remove an old shower arm and replace it with a dual shower head/hose combination and have run into a couple bumps.  Has anyone here done a replacement like this before?

First, the instructions seem to indicate that I need to first remove that brass connector from inside the diverter (see first photo), but it doesn't want to budge. I've removed the two small screws that are meant to be holding it in place already. Is it supposed to just pop out? Unscrew? How do you remove this?

Second, does anyone have any tips for how to remove the old shower arm(see second photo)? It is very stuck, and I haven't been able to get enough grip to actually start turning it. So far the normal adjustable wrench I have hasn't been much help (it just slides around). Is there a better tool for this?

My gratitude for any guidance you can provide!

Re: How to replace old shower arm with new shower/hose combination

Hello @PumpkinDIY

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us and thanks for sharing your question about replacing your shower arm.

I propose putting aside your new shower assembly and beginning with your old shower head. Your old shower arm I suspect is kept in place using a grub screw. You'll notice that the back of the shower arm is covered with plumber's tape. I suggest removing it and see if you can find a small access hole that contains a grub screw. Once you find the grub screw use an Allen key to remove it and put the grub screw in safe secure spot.

Once the grub screw is off, you should be able to turn or pull the old shower arm off. What you'll have left on your wall is the flange and brass connector which I suspect you can unscrew using a shifter. Once all the parts have been removed, you should be able to see the threaded brass wall outlet on your wall.

Nest is your new shower head. The body of the shower assembly has a special brass fitting that is fixed in place and must be removed first in order to install the entire set. The brass connector is held in place with grub screws as well. There will be two of them one on each side of the brass connector, I suggest searching for the access hole where the grub screws are. Once you locate them use your Allen key to remove the grub screws. Keep them in a safe place as they are so easy to loose.

Once the grub screws are off the brass connector can be pulled out. This brass connector can now be installed to your wall outlet. Please make sure to use plumber's tape on the threaded fitting on the wall before screwing the brass connector in place. Please observe carefully the position of the brass connector as it directly affects the position of the body of the shower assembly. Always carry out a test fitting to make sure that the shower body assembly is facing in the correct direction.

The brass connector might need to be adjusted several times in order to be in the right direction. When you are confident that it is facing the right way, I suggest following the rest of the assembly instructions that came with the shower head.

If you have any other questions we can help with, please let us know.
