How to replace a Toilet with floor waste?

Hi all. Am thinking of replacing tired old toilet. On inspection, looks like toilet is cemented down, and copper waste pipe is coming up through floor. Copper waste pipe is 145mm.

Hoping to get suggestions from others smarter than me !Toilet Waste Entrance (1).JPGToilet Waste Entrance (2).JPG

Re: How to replace a Toilet with floor waste?

Hello @KAITE_S

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thank you for sharing your question about replacing your toilet.

Your toilet has an in-ground exit which is known as an "S" trap. Therefore. when you decide to replace your toilet make sure to get an "S" trap model. Please note that there are also models that say "S&P" compatible toilet. These toilets have "U bend" adapters that come with them allowing them to be converted to "S" trap models. Please look and choose carefully.

Another item to watch out for is called the set-out, it is the distance of the waste pipe on the floor to the wall. But it is technically measured from the center of the waste pipe to the wall. This measurement once you have it will also be printed at the side of the box of the toilet. It will often say suitable for set-out from "140mm to 230mm". This is an indication that the toilet can be installed if your set-out falls within its limits.

There are various models available at the store, but the basic points I've mentioned should be sufficient to guide your decision-making. Regarding a possible repair, your toilet has been sealed with a type of bitumen sealer, which I believe has reached the end of its service life. I recommend looking at Fluidmaster Universal Wax Pan Seal as a possible replacement for the old seal. Would it be possible for you to please take a photo of the entire toilet including the cistern and cistern tap? This will give our members a better idea of its layout. We can then make recommendations on possible replacement units.

I also recommend having a look at the store's toilet installation service. This will make it much more convenient for you as the toilet and its installation can be organized at the store.

If you have any other questions we can help with, please let us know.

Re: How to replace a Toilet with floor waste?

Hi Eric,

Thanks for your prompt reply.

Thankyou for all the details you have outlined.

My wife in her wisdom, has already purchased a unit from the Bunnings at the Adelaide Airport Branch.

I have attached a photo FYI. From reading the enclosed information, I think it should be suitable.

The current Set-out from the wall is 150mm. The diameter of the copper waste pipe is 145mm.

I have done some research, but have not been able to see any situations where there was a copper waste pipe protruding above ground level.

Nearly all applications I have seen have had  circular Flanges with hold down bolts that fix down the basin to the floor.

I am sure you are aware the the unit we have comes with an Orbital Variable Offset Connector.I understand the principle of this, but need to confirm the connection of this to the Copper Waste Pipe. Thanks in advance for your response.

Re: How to replace a Toilet with floor waste?

Hello @KAITE_S

Just a friendly reminder that all plumbing work must be carried out by a licensed plumber for safety and compliance.

If the drainpipe in your home was an ordinary PVC waste pipe it would have been much simpler to install. However, because of the copper pipe, I suggest engaging the toilet installation service at the store. It will technically be a very involved installation as the plumber might possibly have to cut the copper pipe to retro fit a PVC converter/receiver. I recommend leaving this installation to the professionals.

If you have any other questions we can help with, please let us know.
