How to replace 290mm bathroom exhaust fan?

I am in the process of replacing my bathroom exhaust fan. The internal diameter is 270mm. The hole in the ceiling is 290mm. Do you sell 270mm exhaust fans?

justadash question re ceiling exhaust fan installation

Dear Justadash (please let me know if I have responded thru the correct chanel, this is my first post)

Regarding the hole in your ceiling for exhaust fan: Ceiling mounted fan being recessed need the approriate support frame that is adjustable to suit the diameter of the hole in the ceiling. Also, the grille plate is usually easily detached to allow the fitment of the fan body to the hole. The hole diameter can be larger but no more than 25mm would be the norm - in order to accommodate the limit of adjustment of the fan's integral frame supports (feet) that are clipped to the ceiling plaster board using built-in screws or latches, etc. The grille plate when reattached (usually clicks into place over plastic ear tabs on the fan body) will conceal any small gap between the hole and the fan body ring (in your case the gap will be about 10mm which might be on the nearing the limit but based on limited facts of your fan I anticipate your grille diameter around 35mm larger than the fan body diameter (i.e. 285mm). This is 15mm more than the ceiling hole diameter, hence the grille perimeter will be offset 7.5mm from the hole perimeter, thus covering the 10mm gap between the fan body and ceiling hole perimeter.  (All of the above assumes a fan body dia of 250mm and a grille dia of 285mm)

Re: bathroom exhaust fan

Hello @justadash

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about replacing your bathroom exhaust fan.

If your ceiling cut out is 290mm a standard exhaust fan that needs a 290mm cut out should fit properly. For example, the following exhaust fans need 290mm cutouts:

However, if you are searching for exhaust fans that have a 270mm cut out, the only ones available are the smaller 250mm set. If you find that you need a smaller exhaust fan, it's best to just patch the current hole and cut a smaller one in another section of your ceiling.

Just a friendly reminder that any electrical work must be carried out by a licensed electrician for safety and compliance.
