How to repair glass brick mortar?

I want to fill in the joints that cracked and chipped away on my glass block window in the laundry room next to a sink and also in the bathroom next to a bathtub. I'm just wondering if I can use the Mortarfil caulking tube to fill these joint gaps. If so, do I need to break away the old fillings (mortar?) before applying the Mortafil?

Also, on the edges of my bathtub, there is a grout-like sealant instead of silicone, which I'm not sure if it's the appropriate sealant for a wet environment. There is also a gap in one area of the bathtub edge and I'm wondering how I should seal it.

Re: Glass block joint cracked mortar?

Hi @deeian

That  gap in your laundry might be best covered  by a  timber strip/moulding  there are also plastic striips avaliable at  Bunnings.  Timber looks nice and some are pre undercoated simply use a  little liquid nails will glue it in place is the simlpest option. A plastic strip will never  rot as a  functional option.

Measure the gap you want to cover so you can look at the best cover up trim be mindful about how wide the trim is to i would aim at 10mm width.

The bathroom you allready have a chalking gun buy a  bathroom silicon white and tape along the walls and bath egde  for a neat job and fill the tile to bath  gap  Use a  bathroom silicon as it is usually more mould resistant apply it on bone dry surfaces.

Re: How to repair glass brick mortar?

Hi @deeian,

A warm welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is wonderful to have you with us.

It's great to see you've already received some excellent advice from @Jewelleryrescue, my thinking is much the same as his.

I believe they have used grout around the laundry window. Regardless of what it is, it should be removed and the black trim piece cleaned up before proceeding.

A timber trim such as this 18 x 18mm Pine Primed Quad would be a great option for your laundry window. As Jewelleryrescue has said, it can be stuck in place with Liquid Nails. You would then need to use a water-resistant gap filler such as Selleys White No More Gaps Bathroom And Kitchen Gap Filler to seal the top and bottom edges before painting.

In your bathroom, you'll need a white silicone sealant such as Selleys White For Life Wet Area Waterproof Silicone Sealant.

Check out How To Silicone a Gap for some guidance.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Jacob
