How to remove internal door mechanism?

I am changing some internal door handles and mechanisms. I have done this before for these door handles but I don’t remember how to remove the centre rod that both sides of the door handle connect to. (See photos) I have tried turning the rod clockwise and anti clockwise from both sides and using a pair of pliers to pull it free. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Re: Removing internal door mechanism

Hi @philandlyndall,

Thank you for your question and welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.

I think I can see a lip on one side of the spindle. I have circled this below.

I suspect that this means the spindle needs to be removed from this side.

There can also sometimes be a small rubber o-ring that sits in a groove right near the latch mechanism that may need to be removed to pull the spindle out.

I have circled where this might be below.

Let me know how you go. If this doesn't solve the issue, we might need to get a bit more forceful.

Jacob
