Hi,
I'm wondering if you can tell me the best approach to removing this shower curb. I thought it was going to be solid, but its actually U-shaped with metal running through the middle.
Can you please also tell me whether it is normal for concrete to have visible fibres sticking out?
Thanks!
Anna
Hi @AnnaH1,
Removing a shower curb can be a bit more complex than it initially seems, especially with the setup you’ve described. First, it’s important to ensure that the waterproofing membrane beneath the curb is intact; otherwise, you’ll need to reinstate it once the curb is removed. This waterproofing layer is essential to prevent water from seeping into the subfloor and surrounding areas, so it’s worth double-checking before you proceed. The metal angle you see within the curb is likely a waterstop, a metal barrier installed to prevent water from migrating beyond the shower area. This component is especially important for directing water away from the floor outside the shower and ensuring that the entire area stays dry.
Since the curb appears to be U-shaped with metal inside, it’s possible that fibre-reinforced concrete was used, especially given its thin profile. Fibre reinforcement is sometimes used in thin concrete structures for added strength, which is likely why you’re seeing visible fibres sticking out. These fibres are normal and part of the material’s design, as they help prevent cracking. If any part of the process feels uncertain or if you are concerned that it could be asbestos, it would be wise to consult a professional, as they can ensure that both the removal and any subsequent repairs, including waterproofing and sealing, are properly handled.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
