How to know if a bucket is solvent resistant?

I'd like to repaint my bathtub following the instructions here https://www.bunnings.com.au/diy-advice/home-improvement/baths-showers-toilets/how-to-paint-a-bath

It says that I need a solvent-resistant bucket to store the paint in, and links to the buckets section https://www.bunnings.com.au/products/storage-cleaning/cleaning/buckets-basins-pails

I like the look of these little Handy Pails https://www.bunnings.com.au/handy-2-3l-pail-bucket-with-lid_p4460008

which include the following in the description:

This Pail Bucket is certified by the following codes:
• HAACP Codex Alimentarius | Alinorm 97/13A
• ISO90001: 2015
• FDA approved for food contact approved materials

Does this mean it is solvent resistant? Or does the description have to actually include those words?

Re: How to know if a bucket is solvent resistant?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @RandomUsername. It's wonderful to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about solvent-resistant buckets.

To determine if a bucket is solvent-resistant, you typically need to check the manufacturer’s specifications or labels. The certifications you mentioned—like HAACP and FDA approval—indicate that the materials are safe for food contact, but they don't specifically confirm solvent resistance.

For painting projects, it’s best to look for buckets explicitly labelled as "solvent-resistant" or "chemical-resistant." If the product description doesn’t include those terms, it may not be suitable for storing solvent-based paints. I'd recommend you consider the UNi-PRO 15L Heavy Duty Painters Bucket or the Sabco 12.5L Bulldozer Window Bucket.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Re: How to know if a bucket is solvent resistant?

Hi Mitchell,

Thanks for your response.

For this project the bucket needs to have a lid, because you've got to store it in the fridge.

Would this one be ok? https://www.bunnings.com.au/uni-pro-3-3l-plastic-paint-pot-lid_p0468297 ?

It doesn't specifically say "solvent resistant", but does say that it is "Suitable for use with acrylic & enamel paints".

Also could you please pass on this suggestion for your web team: update the linked text in the DIY Advice page for painting a bath to point to the painting buckets page instead of the cleaning buckets page.

Re: How to know if a bucket is solvent resistant?

Sorry @RandomUsername, I should have picked up it is needed for storage. I've spoken to  Uni-Pro and that container is solvent-resistant, so should be fine for storing the paint in.

Word of advice though, double wrap the bucket in plastic and all the better if it is a sandwich bag large enough for the pot to go in and then sealed. The paint is particularly pungent and you don't want that smell travelling through your fridge.

Thanks for checking that out for me Mitchell, much appreciated.

And thanks for the tip, I'll make sure to wrap it well!
