How to fix water damage?

Hi all, I recently bought my first house and after a few months living here I noticed some water damage in my living room, which backs onto my ensuite.  I have had a look behind my wall through the powerpoint and a vent in the wall and could see mould growing. I think there may have been a leak at one point because I can see a few patches on the wall and maybe they didnt let it dry fully before closing it up.

I would like to have a go at removing the mould and water damaged bits myself. The picture attached shows where the mould is growing behind the wall.

my question is, how far up and how far around the shower do I have to remove? My concerns are mostly about waterproofing especially in the corners where old and new villaboard would meet.

Also, any tips on this kind of project or dealing with mould would be appreciated.

Re: How far aroundin my shower to demo

Hello @emnm10

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about the leak around your shower.

I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I'm afraid your showers waterproofing has failed. Technically the proper course of action is to remove the tiles of your shower, and a new waterproofing membrane applied to the area. You could temporarily patch the leak with CPC 220ml Shower Plug Sealant. But it is difficult to tell how bad the damage is and if the plug sealant will be able to manage. Treating the mould infestation from the other side of the room is possible but it will not be an effective solution unless the leak is properly addressed.

There is also the possibility that the wet area panel has been compromised and will need to be replaced. I propose engaging the services of a shower waterproofing specialist and getting a quote for retiling and re-sealing your shower area.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Eric
