How to fix my leaky tap?

Have removed the cap, tap and tap bonnet but I'm not sure what to do next. The spindle only has 4 very small ridges at the top of the black (plastic?) part near the wall. Do I need a special tool or will my multi grips do it? I'm scared to try without advice because i don't want to break it.

Not a handy man, or woman, but grateful in advance :smile:tap washer.jpgtap washer 2.jpg

Re: How to fix my leaky tap?

Hello @Shippy

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's wonderful to have you join us, and thank you for sharing your question about your taps.

That is a cover cap that is held in place by the silicone sealer. I suggest digging the silicone out with a flat blade screwdriver. It will be hard going, but once you have the silicone removed use a multigrip tool to remove the black plastic cover cap. I propose turning it anti-clockwise first and see if it starts to loosen up, but it goes tighter test it in the other direction.

Once the black plastic cover is removed, you should be able to see the spindles full assembly. Would it be possible for you post a photo of your taps handle and cap cover? This will help us try and identify your tapware.

If you have any other questions we can help with, please let us know.

Re: How to fix my leaky tap?

Thank you Eric!!! I will give that a go today, and might need to make a trip to Bunnings for some more silicon to fill it in after - I'm assuming it's there for a reason and not just to give another step in the removal process?

I've attached a photo of the hot tap for id-ing tapware. It's the cold that's dripping, but they are the same on the outside.

After being a single Mum for years, I am stoked to have found somewhere to get help with this stuff. Tradies are rare in our region since the big floods, and costly (with good reason, I know. Just every cent counts.)

Re: How to fix my leaky tap?

Hi @Shippy,

It's a pleasure to have you join us; you will find all the assistance you need within the community, as it's filled with knowledgeable and helpful members.

The silicone prevents any water that might seep behind the cover flange from entering your wall. Refilling the area would be a good idea, so pick up some silicone next time you're in-store.

It sounds like you're trying to resolve the leak, have a read through this helpful guide: How to replace a tap washer. You've already completed the most difficult part; removing the stubborn conical cover flange.

Please let me know if you have any questions at all.
