How to fix Gainsborough door lever?

image.jpg

Hello, my Gainsborough door suddenly stopped working. It was locked from inside (even tho I didn’t lock the door) and I wasn’t able to open the door from inside and had to get someone to open the door from outside which they were able to. I open the lever but wasn’t sure what the problem is. Can anyone assist me ?

Re: How to fix Gainsborough door lever?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @vero100. It's terrific to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about fixing a door lever.

It sounds like the internal mechanism of your Gainsborough door lever may have failed or become misaligned. Since the door appeared locked even though you didn’t engage the lock, it’s possible that the privacy snib or the internal latch mechanism didn’t retract properly when the handle was turned. These issues can sometimes occur if the return spring or latch components wear out or jam.

A good first step would be to check the spindle — the square rod that runs through the latch — to ensure it’s not damaged or worn. You can also try rotating the spindle with pliers to see if the latch retracts. If it doesn’t, the latch mechanism itself is likely the issue and may need replacing. Gainsborough latches are generally available separately and can be swapped out fairly easily. If your lever set is still under warranty, I would recommend returning it to your nearest Bunnings store with your proof of purchase.

If you’re unsure or prefer help, a locksmith or handyperson would be able to diagnose and repair it for you.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Re: How to fix Gainsborough door lever?

Hello MitchellMC, thank you for the reply ! I tried as you mentioned above and the latch does retracts. I took everything out and tried to reinstall in again but right now the lever are stuck with the squat rod in the middle. I didn’t have any screw in it but unsure why it’s stuck. :unhappy:

Hi @vero100,

Can you please take a picture of it currently? That would give us a better idea of what might be causing it to be stuck.

Re: How to fix Gainsborough door lever?

Right, so you've placed the levers back on the spindle, and now that won't come off again, @vero100? Was there a pin or release mechanism you had to depress the first time you removed the levers? It seems unusual that the first time they were removed without difficulty, but now they are being stubborn.
